Brother & Cooter Memorial

In Louisiana there are nicknames. This couple went by Brother and Cooter. I don’t know why. They are the parents of my brother-in-law. His mom, Cooter, died last week at the age of 98. Brother died when he was only 61 in the mid-1980s. This portrait was made from a reference photo taken early in their marriage. It’s hard to work from an old black and white, and there aren’t many other photos of them despite their being a handsome couple.

Early in the painting process Cooter looked like Jackie O, but as I took advice from my sister she began to look more like Laura Bush. She and Brother were stylin’ in trendy clothes from the era.
