Introduction

The big cat perched motionlessly atop the tallest mausoleum in the City of the Dead. His white fur, was barely perceptible against the marble tombs. Behind him the moon began to blush, its pale surface unable to resist the crimson red that heralded the Blood Moon.

Clouds drifted across the sky, heavy and slow. He resented the responsibility, the constant pressure of safeguarding the clowder, but he had no choice. His cats depended on him, and for their sake, he would sacrifice everything. His comfort, his desires—none of it mattered compared to their safety. Besides, what were they anyway? He hadn’t known comfort since he was a kitten in the Neighborhood.

Below him, the City stretched out in rows of stone and silence. The cemetery had been their home for years, a place they called simply “The City.” Its alabaster tombs and monuments provided unexpected cover for the clowder of mostly white cats, allowing them to move unseen in the pale moonlight.

The Warrior Chief leapt through the mist and into the moonlight, his olive-green eyes flashing as he landed silently beside the Overlord. For a moment, the two brothers froze, sizing each other up, as if neither could be fully certain of the other’s intent. Then the Overlord said, “Brother,” before he slowly turned his head back toward the City, resuming his vigil.

The Warrior Chief growled, a low rumble in his throat, and moved closer, his gaze shifting toward the ground below the mausoleum. “Two missing.”

The Overlord didn’t stir.

Impatience flashed in the Warrior Chief’s eyes as he sat down and gave his shoulder an angry, quick lick. “Two cats have vanished.”

The fog curled around their feet, thick and unyielding, as the flushing moon crept higher into the sky.
